Beyond Execution

19 Apr 2012 / 0 Comments / in CQ, Non-Training Alternatives, Working Smarter/by Clark Quinn

In a recent post, Harold Jarche talks eloquently about moving into the networked era, and practices of workscaping.  He points to this insightful model by Jane Hart, showing the bigger picture supporting performance in the workplace, or what I like to call Big L learning. Read more →

Sharing Failure

26 Jan 2012 / 0 Comments / in Communities of Practice, CQ, Inspiring Change, Next Practices, Working Smarter/by Clark Quinn

I’ve earlier talked about the importance of failure in learning, and now it’s revealed that Apple’s leadership development program plays that up in a big way.  There are risks in sharing, and rewards. And ways to do it better and worse. Read more →

  • On the Horizon

06 Jan 2012 / 0 Comments / in CQ, Deep Dive Engagement, Integrating Work and Learning/by Clark Quinn

I’ve been using the tag ‘learning experience design strategy’ as a way to think about not taking the same old approaches of events über ales.  The fact of the matter is that we’ve quite a lot of models and resources to draw upon, and we need to rethink what we’re doing.

The problem is that it goes far beyond just a more enlightened instructional design, which of course we need.  We need to think of content architectures, blends between formal and informal, contextual awareness, cross-platform delivery, and more.  It involves technology systems, design processes, organizational change, and more.  We also need to focus on the bigger picture. Through the 70:20:10 Looking Glass

29 Dec 2011 / 0 Comments / in Articles, CJ, Deep Dive Engagement, Working Smarter/by Charles Jennings

This is the second of three posts adapted from articles written for Inside Learning Technologies & Skills magazine. The original has been published here.

The third article will be posted here a little while after it has been published in the magazine for the Learning Technologies Conference and Exhibition in London 26-27 January 2012.

In the first article in this ‘Alice’ series I focused on the changing world of work and the evidence that workplace learning is usually more effective and efficient than formal learning. I also spoke of the need for learning departments to ‘join the dance’ (like the lobster inAlice) and develop new skills and capabilities so they can incorporate learning outside classrooms into their armoury, along with the development of structured learning. Social Media + Learning = much more than Social Learning

10 Oct 2011 / 0 Comments / in Articles, Inspiring Change, JH, Non-Training Alternatives/by Jane Hart

This article was written for the E-Learning Council, and first appeared on 10 October 2011

Although we learn every day, in everything we do, whether it is in what we read,  watch or listen to, or in the conversations and discussions we have with other people, at some time or other people started believing that the only important learning happens in a formal setting, e.g. in a school classroom or a university lecture hall. 21st Century L&D Skills

08 Aug 2011 / 0 Comments / in CJ, Inspiring Change, Next Practices/by Charles Jennings

I was recently involved in a discussion about 21st Century learning skills in one of the LinkedIn Groups. It got me thinking about a piece I’d written for TrainingZone a few months ago titled ‘What does your ideal L&D team look like in 2010?’ I’ve posted that article here, with some changes and updates. Five Barriers to Effective Learning in Organisations

07 Apr 2011 / 0 Comments / in CJ, Inspiring Change, Integrating Work and Learning/by Charles Jennings

Very few of us would argue with the proposition that a lot of organisational learning and development activity is sub-optimal to the extent that it provides little value to participants and their organisations. Read more →

Go straight to the finish line

29 Jan 2010 / 0 Comments / in Informal Learning, Inspiring Change, JC/by Jay Cross

Two of my colleagues at the Internet Time Alliance, Jane Hart and Charles Jennings just returned from speaking at the Learning Technologies conference in London.

The conference program would lead you to assume that the Learning Technologies conference would be a hotbed of social and informal learning. Read more →
